About

Rwandan Photographer based in Montreal

Hello, my name is Aliack Chelsea Kalira Sheja, a Rwandan photographer based in Montreal. I started doing photography in 2022 where I do film photography mostly in black and white.

I was drawn to photography because of its similarities to films, books, and nature. Sometimes, when you watch a film, read a book, or even take a walk, you may see something or hear a sound that resonates with you. These moments are raw and authentic, and I find that they stay with you forever. There is a serenity that these moments bring me, and I want my pictures to convey the same feeling. I aim to capture that sense of serenity and calmness in my work.

Personal Experience

Personally, as poetry writer, primarily focusing on Haiku, which is a short form of poetry that originated in Japan. This connection to brevity and depth is what draws me to photography. Both are means of expressing myself and dealing with my emotions. I started writing first, but I kept envisioning images related to my words, which led me to acquire my first camera, a Nikon FM. Since I primarily work with film photography, I understand that I have no room for error. Because of this, I strive to express myself in a clear and concise manner to effectively convey my thoughts and feelings.

How I approach my art

It is critical to arrive early for my shoots to prepare the set and stage the props, ensuring that the photo sessions run smoothly. I believe this is a crucial role of a photo director; it’s akin to a conductor leading a choir to create a symphony. I have a passion for fine art photography and documentary cinema, and these are the fields I wish to explore further. My ultimate goal is to have my work exhibited in museums.
